Sometimes it's the little things that trip you up ... and so it was the other night that Paul Bundred and I tried to figure out how to reorder modules in the Joomla 1.7 module manager. It turned out to be one of those things that took 20 minutes to figure out and a little bit of swearing at the screen but was ultimately solved in two simple steps.

The Challenge

Try as I might we couldn't seem to get the up / down arrows to show on the page or even type into the ordering box to effect any change in the way my modules were ordered on the page.

Googling

After a certain amount of head scratching and skype conversation I googled this thread on the Joomla forum which lead to the answer.

The Solution

While this feature is automatically present in Joomla 1.5, in Joomla 1.7 you need to take an extra step. For anyone else looking how to reorder modules in the Joomla 1.7 module manager here is the process that you need to follow:

1. After navigating to extensions > module manager click on the column title labelled "Ordering".

1. Once the page reloads you will now see the ordering icon, the little up and down arrows and the little save icon next to the ordering column.

Now you can go ahead and reorder the module ordering for your Joomla 1.7 site.
